STATE OF THE WNBA

Can’t shy away from the truth. The Women are here to stay. The Chosen One has presented herself to the world. 

There is a lot to like watching WNBA games for the ball-knowers. The top level backcourt players are fun to watch. Arike, Clark, Young, Mitchell, Sabrina. To name a few off the dome. But they haven’t quite taken over. Game runs through the bigs like 80s NBA. But with that comes some chippy games – I say let them fight (all sports should). But yes the floor on the league is much lower. Bench players have no ability to come in and catch a SC Top 10. It’s not happening. But the future always looks brighter than the past. The league is about to boom.

Caitlin Clark is something this game has never seen. Saying that is not a dig to the pioneers before her. It’s the fucking truth. She is pure entertainment and that’s the name of the game. Eyeballs mean $ and Caitlin Clark has MILLIONS of em. Including mine. Growth of the league is being halted due to this media mess. Or maybe not, maybe its fuel for the fire, who knows? 

Now – Two that did deserve (and still deserve) vastly more recognition prior to the ascension of Christ are A’ja Wilson and Arike Ogunbawale – who you may see me refer to as “Frike”. 

We’ll start with A’ja since she holds the torch. She’s the female Tim Duncan. She wins. She dominates the midrange and is big as hell. Clean ass footwork and a top 5 snoozer mixtape because she’s kind of just too good fundamentally – a HS coaches dream. She’s going down in the “Most Dominant of all Time” category. Frike on the other hand is what every other guard in the league thinks they are – clean as hell, shifty, and quick with the strap. She obliterated the corrupt mafia that kept her off the Olympic team to solidify my respect. That same mafia almost cost our country Gold.

Don’t drink the Kool-Aid. Either watch the games or don’t. But miss me with the ASS LEVEL media environment with this sport. The ROY race is widening. The Olympic Roster did not have the best 12. I’m not saying Clark is top 12…yet. But, they played the political game picking the team, why not play the game right? They didn’t want the most marketable player? They Home Alone’d themselves. Everyone was watching 22 with the family vacation going on overseas. All our eyes were on still – while she wasn’t even playing?

But back to her – Overkill? Maybe sometimes, but she’s got the world by the balls. 

Once that intro screen fades and the cameras get rolling – we get some really weird shit though. Some not real shit. Shit that doesn’t even make sense. Diss here. Odd timed critique there. Interviews to fan the jealousy flame of the other players. What basis do they stand on though? A lot of turnovers as a Rookie?… Peyton Manning? 

She’s leading the league in assists – and likely on her way to scraping 20 and 10. LeBron Kobe Malone Stockton Kidd Olajuwon Malone Thomas Westbrook Harden make for the top 10 turnover kings in men’s history. They want the eyeballs, comparisons to the men are to come. I didn’t make the rules. Correct me if I’m wrong though, those dudes are all in the Hall of Fame, you know that thing for the good players. She handles the rock on every possession on a rebuilding team. Let’s understand ball here, ok?

Now for Angel, Let’s give her the respect she deserves as a Champ and bully. But please keep it the fuck real. Rebounding your own misses is a cheat code for SSI (Stat Sheet Inflation, CRME). She is still on THE good team though…The side of growth and change. She will be due royalties on every player’s inflated contract in the coming years. Just as Juju and Paige follow behind. There is a new age in Women’s Hoops.
